from: Transparency as a battleground
With pastel and plush against old gods and new demons. Lara Gorski 2022
Rauwald's colour codes are also affected by current events, and here, too, the media-digital, permanent linking of images leaves its mark, which the artist transforms into the result of the powerful gouache technique to process the war events in Belarus, Ukraine or reports from refugee camps outside the borders of Europe. The impressions of the hard colours of the war images mix with soft pink and purple tones, which in their colourfulness move dangerously close to haematomas and bloody injuries. Pastels and suggested plush teddies are juxtaposed with the grimy colourfulness of tank tracks, asphalt, steel and earth. The dynamics of the order testify to the excessive demands of the events, but also to the anger and strength to deal with them, to name them painterly and to bring them into this oscillating space of the transparent film. On the interface of transparency, these events present themselves on a meta-level, the image carrier is open, and the witnessing begins.
